ta da. here it is in all it's gory. I'm on like #21 by now; I've lost count.
At last count (July 2011), there are 21 profiles for individuals named Pauline Yu on LinkedIn. We've cleared double digits!
Court TV made a documentary about Marty! They have a nice easy to click-thru synopses (why he's in a section entitled "notorious murders" is beyond me, unless you consider all those poor insurance companies murdered) and some extra material. He pled guilty as did that sketchy Vatican buddy of his, so they can be cellies in prison.
Definitions and references about oblique, but fun words like parthenogenesis and zugunruhe.Parthenogenesis: Reproduction by the development of an unfertilized egg....typically involves the development of eggs into viable offspring from virgin females without fertilization by spermatozoa....Also the form of apogamy in which an embryo develops from an unfertilized egg, as among certain algae and fungi. (modified from an old Websters)
Parthenogenesis is no longer only for lower invertebrates, such as aphids, mites and nematode worms--it's also been found in fish, birds and lizards. For a reference on Cnemidophorus see Crews, J. and M.C. Moore. 1989(? or 1990). Reproductive biology of parthenogenetic whiptail lizards. In Biology of the Cnemidophorus. J. Wright (ed.) Allen Press, Lawrence, KS. (note: they were originally discovered by Alice Delwiche back in the 50's but the patriarchal hegemony refused to believe her discovery...)
Zugunruhe: The technical term, from German, for the restless behavior exhibited by migratory birds in captivity during the seasons which they would normally be migrating. Behaviorists have been able to study the endocrine controls and navigational mechanisms associated with migration from studying zugunruhe. Cool stuff by Steve Emlen about stars and zugunruhe: Emlen, S.T. 1975. Migration: orientation and navigation. In Avian Biology. D.S. Farner and J.R. King (eds.) Academic Press, New York.
Homothallism: A mating system found in fungi wherein each spore grows into a self-compatible individual which can complete its life cycle without mating(cribbed from Bayman, 1987). In otherwords, homothallic fungi can form basidiocarp(aka a mushroom) where cells undergo meiosis, without having mated with a sexually compatible individual first. Very similar conceptually to parthenogenesis, but the term is specific to fungi.
For a very specific treatment on this phenomenon in a common North American species of mushroom: Bayman, P. 1987. Homothallism in Coprinus patouillardii; Reproductive Biology and Nuclear Behavior. PhD thesis. University of California, Berkeley.
A selection of favorite quotations and in-jokes. Disclaimer: I've tried to credit everyone where credit is due, and to quote verbatim whenever possible. I've added my own commentary here and there, and where the quotes are from fictional characters(TV, books etc.) I've credited the characters who said it. I have taken bits and pieces out of context, if only to reinforce their interest or humor value. I'm not liable for any injuries which might result from ego-surfing these listings. To cut down on the scrollfest, I've created a menu of discrete time blocks according to my housing situations in chronological order(since that's the quotations are listed mostly sequentially).(please note that I'm trying to fix links on the other pages, and they may not all be fully updated yet)
